Spain arrests suspect in February speedboat crash that killed 2 police officers


MADRID (AP) – Spanish authorities have arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with the deaths of two police officers in February when a speedboat suspected of belonging to drug smugglers crashed into their Guardia Civil patrol vessel of Spain said Thursday.

U The incident occurred on February 9when the Civil Guard boat was on patrol identifying the speedboats spotted in the southern port of Barbate. Video footage showed a speedboat crashing into the vessel in the harbor waters.

The Civil Guard said in a statement that it had arrested a suspect and asked a local court to issue international arrest warrants for three people who were in the speedboat, due to the belief that the others were out of Spain since shortly after the incident.

Two other members of the six-person crew were injured, the Civil Guard said in February.

The coast of Spain near the Strait of Gibraltar is a hotspot for drug trafficking from Morocco to Europe.
